Vice Grips are also known as locking pliers or mole grips. These are used to tightly grip a part without relying on the operator's own hand strength to keep the jaws together, and are much less prone to slipping. The pliers lock tightly closed based on the position of an adjustment thumb screw, thus allowing them to fit arbitrarily sized parts. Note that vice grips should be adjusted before clamping the part to ensure the strongest grip.
